In Intro to Monotype, students work playfully and experimentally with texture and color through the monoprint process. In monoprinting, ink is applied to a plate with a brayer or a brush to create a layer of color. This inked surface can then be altered, added to, or masked with objects or stencils before being sent through the press. The result is a unique, freeform print that can be layered upon again and again!
This workshop covers the basic monoprinting techniques: additive and subtractive mark-making, trace monotypes, offset and ghost prints. Proper operation of an etching press for monotype printing will also be demonstrated.
With this knowledge, students will have time to experiment with found materials such as lace, fresh plant matter, netting, and paper to make colorful, layered compositions.
Monoprinting can easily be incorporated into your artistic practice; you can collage with your prints, draw on top of them, or use them as color inspiration for future work!
No prior experience required. All materials are provided.
Instructor: Alicia Rinier
Alicia Rinier is a Philadelphia-based interdisciplinary artist. She explores the combination of Print and Fiber through installation and other multi-media works. Their work examines relationships with “home”, identity, memory and nostalgia, material relationships, and liminal spaces. Alicia recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in May of 2021.
