PECO Second Saturdays at Second State Press is our FREE public program that allows families and students to come together and learn about printmaking every second Saturday of the month from 12 – 2pm. Each workshop is family and student centered giving one-on-one opportunities to make art!

April- Seed Saver Screen Printed Books Saturday, April 8th from noon- 2pm Spring is in the air and it’s time to enjoy the green outdoors! In this workshop, book artist J. Pascoe will teach students how to make their very own pocket book. Using screen printing, each book will be unique with printed images of Pennsylvania-native and home-garden plants. These Seed Saver Screen Printed Books are ideal for storing seeds or other small treasures. Each participant will leave with a book that they have made and some seeds to store and then plant at home. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Instructor: J. Pascoe Bio:  Pascoe is an artist living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pascoe received her BFA in Intermedia from Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, Oregon (2004) and her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia (2013). She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University for printmaking and art history and her MA from New York University for visual arts administration concentrating on non-profit organizations. In the past, McTague has worked for The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Dieu Donné, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Suzanne Randolph Fine Arts, and several other non-profit arts organizations in Philadelphia, PA and New York, NY. She also teaches courses at Tyler School of Art and Philadelphia University. Her favorite print medium is screen printing. She received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design. She shows her work in and around Philadelphia, as well as in Raahe, Finland. She is a member of InLiquid and the PA Guild of Craftsmen, and has had a piece on the set of ABC’s “Modern Family”. In this workshop, students will create a series of monoprints using gelli plates, exploring the possibilities of this expressive medium. Monoprinting allows for a spontaneous, painterly approach to printmaking – each print is one of a kind. In addition, students will be able to print from silkscreens and linoleum blocks which can be combined with their monoprints. Each person will walk away with a unique print that’s a combination of multiple techniques. Suitable for ages 5 & up.

Instructor: Gillian Pokalo
Bio: Gillian Pokalo is a printmaker and art educator based in the Philadelphia area. Her work combines photographic imagery with paintings and monoprints in order to create narratives of places. When she is not in the studio, she teaches Kindergarten through 6th grade art to students at Plymouth Meeting Friends School and adult printmaking classes at the Main Line Art Center. She received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design. She shows her work in and around Philadelphia, as well as in Raahe, Finland. Saturday, November 12th from noon- 2 PM

Screen print a personalized paper flag! Participants will create two flags and are invited to make their own stencil out of contact paper and also use prepared geometric imagery to print a unique flag design. Dowels and twine will also be provided to add the finishing touch.
