CRE Fellow 2016: Katie Kaplan
Katie Kaplan is a visual artist born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, currently living and working in Philadelphia. In her current multi-disciplinary practice, she has a focus on exploring printmaking at the intersection of sculpture, installation, fiber arts, photography and video. Her current focus in printmaking is creating a personal language of symbols that draw from mythology, art history, western esotericism, religious iconography, girl culture, herbalism and plant folklore, all reimagined through personal narrative and a queer femme lens.
During her fellowship at Second State Press, she combined relief and silkscreen printmaking processes to create prints on fabric. These prints were then used to create sculptural textile pieces, celebrating and elevating the decorative, the ultra-girly, and the magical aspects of femme identity.
